Lush foliage, exotic flowers and heavenly scent transporting you to a far off land, my dream garden.
The unpredictable British climate makes creating your own tropical paradise a challenge at the best of times, always trying to stay one step ahead of the weather, be it ice and snow, wind and rain or seemingly endless days of sunshine and drought. Yet the first new leaf in spring, a single flower in summer or indeed the first signs of germination after weeks of watching and waiting can make the struggles just melt away.
Choosing to grow exotics does not make for an life easy, quite the opposite in fact, but it can quickly become an obsession, always looking out for the unusual and rare. For most of my life now I have overwintered choice plants and nutured new ones on my windowsills with protests first from my parents and then partners falling on deaf ears.
